Characterization and modeling of PPy bilayer microactuators Part 1. Curvature
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bilayer actuators of gold and polypyrrole doped with dodecylbenzenesulfonate, PPy(DBS), were microfabricated with lengths and thicknesses that varied over two orders of magnitude. The actuators were connected to rigid plates. The curvature of the bilayers was examined as a function of PPy and Au layer thicknesses to enable a determination of the actuation strain and Young’s modulus of the PPy(DBS). Four different Au thicknesses were tested, and maximum curvature was obtained in all cases at a PPy:Au thickness ratio of 5:1. The data could not be fit with a constant value for t m 2 0 b ©

متن کاملOn-chip microelectrodes for electrochemistry with moveable PPy bilayer actuators as working electrodes
We present electrochemical microactuators which have all the electrodes necessary for the actuation -the working, counter, and reference electrodes -onchip. This is a first step towards an all-polymer system, i.e. a system that does not require a liquid electrolyte. The microactuators' performance was as good as when standard, off-chip counter and reference electrodes were used. Specifically, t...
متن کاملPatterning and electrical interfacing of individually controllable conducting polymer microactuators
Conducting polymer actuators such as polypyrrole (PPy) microactuators are interesting candidates to drive autonomous microrobotic devices that require low weight and low power. Simple PPy tri-layer bending type microactuators that operate in air have been demonstrated previously but they lack individual control and had problems with short circuiting due to electrical connections. The lack of mi...
متن کاملBending Actuators with Maximum Curvature and Force and Zero Interfacial Stress
Stress at the interface of a bilayer actuator can lead to delamination, and this stress increases with the difference in the Young’s moduli of the two layers. In this study, an actuator that includes a third ‘buffer’ layer is modeled, and it is shown how optimization of the thickness and modulus of this layer can reduce stress at that interface to zero, with no loss of curvature and only a smal...
متن کاملPerpendicular Actuation with Individually Controlled Polymer Microactuators
We are using microactuators based on a conducting polymer, polypyrrole, and demonstrate here a scheme to make true three-dimensional movements. We present a complementary microfabrication method, which was developed in order to create individually addressable and controllable PPy/Au actuators. Using these individually controlled microactuators we are able to obtain movements both out of and in ...
